Kellers ‹Züricher Novellen› (1876/77) als Exorzismus
Volltext herunterladenThe paper tries to read Gottfried Keller’s ‹Züricher Novellen› (1876/77) out of a new perspective. It investigates the connection between three discourses which structure this cycle: the discourse of demonology, the discourse of historical memory, and the discourse of artistic epigonalism. Thereby it shows how the novellas are bound to the concept of necromancy, the art of summoning the dead and banning them at the same time. Finally, the paper argues that the ‹Züricher Novellen› prove to be a modern text, as they stage themselves as the remnants of an exorcism: The exorcism of history, in which the body of the artwork is shattered.
