Das Zentrale, das Periphere, das Allgemeine und das Partikulare in der frühen deutschen Soziologie

Both the dichotomies of the general and particular on the one hand and of the centre and periphery on the other were starting points for theories of human interactions in the early writings of Ferdinand Tönnies and Georg Simmel during the penultimate decade of the nineteenth century, when German sociology emerged from philosophy. Considerations on the specificity of the human sciences, inspired by Nietzsche and Dilthey, ultimately led the metaphor of the circle to fall into desuetude.
