Prekäre Körper in Andreas Gryphius’ ‹Catharina von Georgien›
Volltext herunterladenGryphius’ play ‹Catharina von Georgien› evolves around a physical and textual wound. Not only is the body that carries religious, political and theatrical meaning shown to be ephemeral, but it is destroyed by the very practices used to inscribe sense. The torture of the main character can thus be read as an image for the possible loss of meaning in the opening of a body, and bodily boundaries come to epitomize the threshold between sense and senselessness. The body is staged as a crucial, but also untenable medium of meaning. Thus, the unambiguous proclamation of the play’s Christian virtue of constantia has to be read in relation to the instability of the body used to stage it.
