There is no disputing the status of German as a pluricentric language. As such, three standard varieties have evolved in Austria, Germany and Switzerland, albeit with strong asymmetries owing, not least, to greatly different numbers of speaker. A highly uneven distribution exists in terms of economic power and of media and publication facilities for dictionaries and teaching materials. Moreover, according to various studies, there seems to be a considerable difference in linguistic awareness and self-confidence among speakers of German in the three centres. Other than its two sister countries, Switzerland still lacks a general dictionary that codifies the standard language. Our article briefly addresses available domestic and external codifications of standard German in Switzerland, and formulates some (minimal) requirements that a general dictionary of the German standard language in Switzerland would have to meet.
